Do I make my game a collab?

Posted by sebulant - November 10th, 2024

Been working on a little game for Newgrounds the past couple weeks. It's basically a recreation of an old Mario minigame for the DS, but with extra rounds to make the game more challenging.

When I started working more on the game, I realised it would lend itself pretty well to being a collab, where everyone could draw the head of a Newgrounds character. Having more characters to choose from than the base 4 makes the game a hell of a lot more challenging and also less repetitive.

The only reason I'm having second thoughts about making this a collab is because there are A LOT of art collaborations happening at the moment. I don't want it to come across like I'm hosting a collab just for the sake of hosting a collab. I'm more than capable of leaving this as a solo project, so part of me feels like it's completely unnecessary to bring lots of people on board.

Also the heads have to be drawn in a specific way to make them fair for the game. I'm not sure if I have the patience (or confidence) to get people to potentially redraw their submissions so they fit better.

Ultimately it makes no difference to me as the game is nearly done, but I think a collab would be more fun.

So I ask the wider community, do I make this game a Newgrounds themed collab, or a Psychonauts themed solo project?

In the end, do as you see fit, however I think this would make for an interesting Pixel Day Collab~!

But I'm not sure if that's Too Far or Too Close...

Pixel day is a good idea, it had completely skipped my mind. I was figuring an early January release date for a collab anyway, so it's not too far/close at all.

Funny that today I finished a pixel art head of one of my characters, it would be so cool if it were a collab, everything depends on who you choose to work with as for this game it looks like the heads requires quality and same graphic line to make the game fair.

Make it like themes, only tankmen heads, clock crew characters, then some customs where you choose which can appear

Special themed rounds would be a good idea if there were a enough characters from the same series. Tankmen in particular might be a little difficult on a black background though lol

@MalFromed more schedule time!

If you want a consistent style then don't make it an art collab, or only collaborate with a few other artists

Clashing art style isn't that big of a deal fortunately. The temp sprites I'm using atm are a mix of flat colours and full shading, and I still think the game is pretty fun despite that.
That said I will probably encourage people to stick to the original Mario games art style if possible anyway

Both.
Though what do you mean by having them drawn in a specific way? Like are we talking about the colors specifically since the sprites used around technically 16 colors (14 if we exclude black and the "background" color.)? Because I already know that the heads are exclusively drawn within a 32x32 canvas.

Maybe "specific" wasn't the best choice of words from me, it's more just making sure that all head sprites are drawn to be about the same size. If a head ends up too thin/flat it can make them pretty hard to spot.

I think the collab is a great idea, one I would want to participate in for sure, but I also hope you'll make the Psychonauts version either way

Maybe I should include a Psychonauts "cheat" code that will bring back all the Psychonauts stuff that's currently in the game right now
