The moderators on PlanetMinecraft are cringe and deleted my blog post over there because they don't allow "announcements". I didn't really announce anything other than "hey im still updating my resource packs lol", which is stupid. Anyway, since they don't want me, YOU are now gonna have to put up with me sperging out over Minecraft resource packs and you WILL read it all or I will CRY.

(imagine the gif worked and the keys are jingling)

Come oooon. Reeeaaad iiiiit. I promise there's cool stuff.

New Minecraft snapshots have been gradually adding in cool new resource pack features, and I have been making stuff with them.

I made a resource pack called 3D Armour, which replaces with 2D inventory sprites for armour with actual 3D models. This is what it looks like:

All the new updates Mojang made completely broke this pack, so I had to remake it from the ground up.

This time the pack is made using composite models:

  • There is a base template model for the helmet, chestplate, leggings and boots, which then has a texture supplied to it by various other child models.
  • These child models can have the base armour texture, leather armour overlay, or the armour trim overlay.
  • These models are then stacked up on top of each other to form the final 3D model you see in game.

As a bonus, the textures used for the armour pull straight from the original game folder. This means that the pack will work with any other resource pack that changes armour textures.

There are unfortunately a couple drawbacks to the 3D models. First one is that you can't see the exact trim pattern on your armour, only the colour, but this was already the case with the 2D sprites anyway. The other drawback is that trimmed and/or leather armour has a very bright enchantment glint. Layering all the armour textures on top of each other also means that several enchantment glints get layered, making a very purple model as a result.

Another pack I have is Custom 3D Books. This gives every book in the game a 3D model, just like the armour pack above. The main appeal of the pack though is the enchanted book textures:

Before the most recent snapshots for 1.21.5, you would need a mod like OptiFine or CIT Resewn for these to appear, now they are completely vanilla.

These are also composite models, where every single enchantment has it's own model. For each enchantment type on a book, a model is layered on top.

For example, if you had a book with Efficiency 5, Unbreaking 3 and Mending, the final model would be the base book, efficiency book, unbreaking book and mending book stacked on top of each other. However only 1 texture will appear, that being mending. Priority is given to mending for all books, then followed by every other enchantment in reverse alphabetical order.

I fear that this whole enchanted book texture thing of mine is about to be replaced though. Mojang just released a new snapshot today that gave all the spawn eggs a unique texture, instead of just being a simple recolour. I've seen people now predicting that custom potion/book textures are next.

Unrelated to my existing packs, I've also been adding other small bits around various parts of the game. Most of this stuff is from 2020, but some is new too.

Each music disc has been given it's own unique album art. I've tried to relate the art to the song vibe/title (Cat, Chirp, 11), whereas others are just patterns based off the old texture (Mellohi, Stal, Ward). I've also drawn various other real albums like these discs too, you can see them on this old Twitter post, bonus points if you can guess any.

The idea behind doing this is so that I can have a jukebox show a disc spinning when playing music, without the disc texture looking wrong. (It's animated too)

Lilypads have a bit more variety. Different sizes and a rare chance to have a flower on them. You cannot tell from the picture, but I've also given them underside textures with stems.

Some Terraria swords. You can get these by renaming a diamond/netherite sword to the respective Terraria sword's name. Some of these textures are ripped from the wiki, but others are completely new textures made to fit the 16x Minecraft artstyle. The Meowmere and Zenith are my favourites, but I will always use Terraprisma because I'm a summoner "main".

For his neutral special, Sebulant wields a gun. I remodelled the crossbow to look like a gun if you call it that in an anvil. There's also a revolver model too, but I'm about to hit the blog image limit and I also can't be bothered to take a screenshot.

Hopefully soon Mojang will add a feature that let us change the models of entities, and also their texture based off names and other NBT data. Back in 2020 I remodelled the faces of the animals in the game, here's the cow as an example:

If Mojang does ever add this feature, I will start again from the ground up. Some old models aren't great, my friends kept telling me I made the sheep look like a monkey.

You can see the other models in these 2 PlanetMinecraft blog posts that the moderators decided to NOT remove:

There is also more stuff I've made, but it's nothing major and I've also hit the blog image limit.

That's all the Minecraft stuff I have (for now).

In other news, I updated my website a little bit, it's now got a games section and links to all my socials.

Still need to make that art gallery too. I'm also considering buying some cheap domain and jumping over to neocities, but I have never touched that website before.

I also want to write about my experience with Wanted's development, but that will probably come a little later still.
